Our studio was responsible for the design of both the front and back gardens at Shell House, located in Camber Sands.
The challenging coastal environment, characterized by strong winds, shifting sands, sea spray, and intense summer sun, required careful consideration of both materials and plant selections to ensure durability and resilience against the harsh conditions.
Inspired by Derek Jarman’s playful use of found objects and the creative spirit of Edwin Sutton—Camber Sands’ own beach guard and artist—we designed these sculptural elements using shells collected from local seafood vendors. Sutton’s iconic ‘shell garden,’ where he crafted patterns in wet concrete, deeply influenced us. Honouring the cultural history of this area, we’ve continued his techniques in our own way to recreate the playful and artistic atmosphere that defines Camber Sands.
